HUN-REN Centre for Energy Research (HUN-REN EK) was established in January 2012 on the basis of two former independent institutions, the Research Institute for Atomic Energy and the Institute of Isotopes and is currently functioning under the Hungarian Research Network (HUN-REN).
HUN-REN EK is a leading research institute in Hungary, specializing in energy research, nuclear technology, and environmental science, and is composed of a diverse team of scientists and engineers, having extensive expertise and experience in research.
HUN-REN EK is committed to advancing scientific knowledge and technological innovation in energy-related fields to meet the challenges of the 21st century. It’s mission is to contribute to a sustainable, safe, and secure energy future through scientific excellence and innovation.
HUN-REN EK is responsible for technical and administrative operation of the Budapest Research Reactor promoting the utilization of the reactor and the related instruments in Hungary and abroad.
HUN-REN EK has strong industry links since several decades and is involved in safety analysis of existing and planned nuclear facilities. Its main clients include the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (HAEA) and the companies in charge of operating the Paks Nuclear Power Plant and the building and commission of Paks II Nuclear Power Plant.
HUN-REN EK is the Technical Support Organization (TSO) of the HAEA and also a member of European Technical Safety Organisations Network (ETSON).
HUN-REN EK has successfully participated and led numerous national and international R&D&I projects.
HUN-REN EK was designated to be the first Collaborating Centre for nuclear security and nuclear forensics of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2016.
HUN-REN EK has several years of experience in training professionals.
HUN-REN EK has extensive links with universities, experts of the Research Centre take part in gradual and post-gradual education and also participate in activities initiated by IAEA and EU.
